There is nothing quite like
exploring a new city and stumbling across a beautiful art gallery. And luckily,
if you adore art galleries you are spoiled for choice with hundreds of the most amazing
galleries located in some of the world’s most amazing cities too. Whether
you are strolling through the modern wonders of the Guggenheim in New York or
the ancient works of art in the National Gallery in London we are lucky to
have so many beautiful galleries around the world to suit every taste possible.
Here are my top six amazing
cities around the world for art galleries, where you will barely have time for
anything other than art because there are so many incredible galleries found
in these cities, you will be spoiled for choice.
1. Paris is often cited as one
of the most beautiful cities in the world, with a wealth of culture and history
to explore. With its quirky and outstanding design and architecture, it comes
as no surprise that Centre Pompidou is one of Paris’ most frequented galleries. Designed to look like “inside-out boiler house.” The gallery is quite
controversial and edgy daringly unconventional and breaking limits. The
architecture is emblematic of the beautiful city itself; quirky, unique and
above all truly beautiful. You also have the Louvre Museum which houses one
of the most famous pieces of art the Mona Lisa. With so many incredible places
to visit and so many pieces of art to enjoy you will fall in love with the city
of love in no time.
2. With its windy streets, narrow
canals, and string of independent coffee shops, Amsterdam is a small capital
that achieves an animated atmosphere. Find yourself engrossed in one of the
many art-house films shown at Smart Project Space, or check out some
contemporary art at the Go Gallery which features street art. Aschenbach &
Hofland Gallery started off as a squat in the 80’s and has now earned a
reputation as being one of Amsterdam’s best galleries! Showcasing a gripping
mix of new on scene talent as well as the well known names, Aschenback &
Hofland is definitely a gallery to visit.
3. London is a brilliant city to
visit if you have an eclectic taste in art as this city is home to some of the
most beautiful art galleries around. You have the Tate Modern and the Tate
(housing some truly iconic pieces of art) but you also have the National
Gallery and many independent galleries too. The city of London is also home to
world class theatre, so in the evenings when you are finished at the galleries
you can enjoy some theatre art too.
4. From the Sagrada Familia to
La Rambla Barcelona is a city full of
life and vitality, brimming with culture! The glorious Catalan city is full of
amazing galleries such as the extremely popular Museu Picasso, which pays
tribute to the world renowned artist, with the first floor dedicated
to “The Blue Period.” The works mark a trajectory of his life, travels and
losses.
5. Enriched with a fascinating
history and vibrant culture, Edinburgh is a magnet for art enthusiasts! Situated
on the vibrant Princess Street that runs straight through the centre of
Edinburgh’s shops is the Royal Scottish Academy! The RSA hosts a range of
different exhibitions such as the works of Elizabeth Blackadder. Alternatively,
if you prefer your galleries on a smaller scale and would rather avoid the
shoulder-to-shoulder queues, a trip to Stills
gallery is thoroughly recommended! As the title suggests the gallery showcases
still photography, with four divided strands the gallery exhibits photography
through social exchange, documentary and film! During the famous annual Edinburgh
Fringe Festival during August, the gallery is used as a festival reading room; offering
information on exhibitions, artist’s talks and story telling.
6. If you have never been to New
York City then as an art lover you are definitely missing out. The city
houses some of the most fascinating art galleries around the world including
my favorite, The Guggenheim. With its obscure but stunning architecture you will
be blown away by this incredible gallery and there are new treasures to find
around each curve of the beautiful building. But that’s not all you will find
here, a quick Google and you will find dozens of other incredible art galleries
to explore too.
